UNDERSTANDING THE PLANETS - THE LUNAR NODES (Part - 1)

In the last series under “Planets” sections, we have described different characteristics of planets and in this series, we will understand the planet more deeply and will know what exactly the planet signifies.

(You can check-out the series describing different characteristic of planets, here -: Planets in Vedic astrology )

In the last post of this series, we have discussed about the planet Saturn. Here, we will discuss about the lunar nodes (Rahu & Ketu).

(Read the previous post of this series here -: The Saturn )

A Brief note on “Rahu” & “Ketu”

Apart from seven planets with physical existence, there are two other planets who don’t have any physical existence but, are as effective as others.

“Rahu” & “Ketu” is actually one planet with two projections.

In ancient Vedic literature, they are described as the head and tail of the snake or, the north and the south node of moon respectively.

According to Hindu scriptures, a demon or, “Asura” named “Svarbhanu” was decapitated by lord Vishnu as he was drinking the nectar or, “Amrita” by disguising among the demigods or, “Devas”.

Decapitation-of-Svarabhanu
Decapitation of Svarabhanu By Lord Visnu ("Mohini" Incarnation)

As he drank nectar, so even after decapitation he remained alive and his head portion became “Rahu” and the rest portion became “Ketu”.

So, Rahu & Ketu symbolizes the same thing but, in opposite direction or, the same subject with opposite flavor.

They are considered as planets or, “grahas” in Vedic astrology because they eclipse the Sun and the Moon.

Though they are not physically present but, they eclipse in particular time intervals and it seems as if they are real planets coming in between Sun and earth or, Moon and earth.

Therefore they are also called as shadow planets or, “chayya graha” in Vedic astrology.

Symbolic meaning of “Rahu” & “Ketu”

Both Rahu & Ketu cause eclipses which is a sudden dramatic change in the atmosphere when a sunny day suddenly changes into evening time (During Solar eclipse) or, a beautiful moon turns red & dark (During lunar eclipse).

The lunar nodes derive their symbolic meaning from this dramatic cosmic event, i.e., “Transformation” or, “Sudden dramatic change”.

Although they symbolizes the same thing but, the way they act is completely opposite.

Rahu signifies the “External transformation” whereas, that of Ketu is “Internal Transformation”.

External transformation brings sudden changes in our external way of living, i.e., in workplace and the way we interact with rest of the world, our contacts and relations etc. whereas, internal transformation brings sudden changes in our emotions, feelings, perception etc.

But, no matter what, a transformation always brings disturbances and a chaos situation because, of its sudden and shocking nature.

Therefore, both Rahu and Ketu represents “Chaos” in external and internal manner respectively.

“Radical changes” and “Radicalism” both in political and ideological front is represented by the lunar nodes. The radicalism of Rahu is “Liberalism” and that of Ketu is “Conservatism”.

Thus, Rahu represents rebels, protesters, punks, revolutionaries, loudmouths etc. whereas, Ketu represents espionage, revolutionary thinkers & writers, subversive persons etc.

Rahu is futuristic and always looks upward and future oriented whereas, Ketu is archaic and looks downward and past oriented.

Rahu is an exploding outward force and Ketu is an imploding inward force and they both represents “Compulsion” or, changes that are irresistible in external & internal manner respectively.

Rahu indicates “Materialism” as an application of externalism but, it is not a materialistic oriented energy because, it is basically an outward force and if combined with proper spiritual principles, it can also indicate a loud preacher or, a spiritual master who expand the spiritual ideas in different and distant places like “Swami Vivekananda”.

On the other hand, Ketu represents introverts, spiritualistic, people who are interested in introspection and meditation for discovering their true nature etc. because, Ketu is a downward force and interested in the origin of things and root cause of events.

These two shadow planets are so powerful that, they act as an agent of amplification in a horoscope. So, they amplify the effects of the house in which they are placed and also the effects of the planet they are in conjunction with (Or, aspect to).

Nature of the Rahu

"Rahu" means "He who commands direction". It is associated with the rising of "Kundalini" energy and falling into material delusion, as well.

It signifies occult power and mind's insatiable curiosity and relentless pursuit to gain experiences.

Rahu's control is intangible and its influence is illusive.

Hallucinations, drugs, never ending desires, abstract thoughts etc. comes under the domain of “Rahu”.

“Rahu” manifests itself in suspicious persons, very old persons, cats (especially, black colored cats), agnostics, atheists, street dogs, smoke, fog & things that are unclear.

Nature of the Ketu

"Ketu" means "He who presents obstacles".

"Ketu" is the introspective function of the mind that scrutinizes the inflowing stimulus and related with spiritual attainment.

Its nature is oriented towards renunciation & self-inquiry in order to perfect the inner realm.

“Ketu” makes the person to be desirous of seeking only what is real and permanent by destroying their materialistic & impermanent desires with a sudden blow. It represents attainments and mastery accumulated over past lifetimes.

transformations from within, epidemics, intuition, psychic abilities, ghosts, spirits, violent and sudden injuries, catastrophic events, witchcraft, fire, hidden things, scandals, renunciation, solitude, spirituality etc. comes under the domain of Ketu.

“Ketu” also manifests itself in old & aged persons, spiritual people, street dogs & cats, insects & worms, people with torn clothes, skin diseases (especially, diseases that are hard to diagnose) etc.

We’ll complete the discussion on Rahu & Ketu in the next and last part of the series “Understanding the Planets”.

HOUSES IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY (PART-3)

In the last 2 parts of our discussion on the houses, we get to know many things about houses like, various house systems in astrology, the correct house system to follow etc. In this post, we will discuss about different categorization of the 12 houses along with the basic meaning of each house. If you haven’t read the first and second part of this discussion then I recommend you to read them first for better understanding of this topic. Read here -:  Part-1  ,  Part-2 Houses as “Bhavas” In Vedic astrology, a house is called as “Bhava”. The word “Bhava” means “Thoughts” and it is very obvious to name the houses as “Bhava” because each house possesses some kind of “Thought” in it and they represent certain things. Like the Rashis (Zodiac signs) and Grahas (Planets), they also represent certain things and thus each house (Bhava) has a special name associated with it that conveys its inner thought or, the related things that it represents. In the ...

HOUSES IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY (PART-1)

Introduction In n astrological chart, houses act like the containers for the planets and zodiac signs. Therefore, the houses are as important as the planets and zodiac signs and form the base of any prediction. In Vedic astrology; just like the zodiac signs (Rashis), each house has a span of 30° and there are 12 houses in total. The ascendant or, rising sign (The zodiac sign that rises from the eastern horizon at the time of birth) plays a vital role in case of determining houses and their span. For example -: If at the time of birth of the native, the zodiac sign “Cancer” is present in the eastern horizon at 7°00’ then, it is become the mid-point of the 1 st house and native is said to have “Cancer” ascendant. In this way, the sign “Leo” takes the mid-point of 2 nd house, “Virgo” takes the mid-point of 3 rd house and so on as shown in the below table (fig-1) -: fig-1 : Houses for Cancer ascendant people Similarly, for “Virgo” ascendant peopl...

HOUSES IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY (PART-2)

In our last part of this topic, we discussed about some preliminary concepts on the houses and different house systems that are used in astrology by different astrologer. Today let’s continue our discussion further. If you haven’t read the first part of this discussion then I recommend you to read that first for better understanding of this topic. Read here -:  Part-1 The Perfect House System After an introduction to so many house systems, an obvious question arises in our mind, i.e., "Which is the most correct house system to use?" Well, the answer for this question is hidden in the experiences of Vedic astrologers regarding various house systems. First of all, among the two broad categories of house systems, most of the Vedic astrologers usually prefer the “Linear house systems” because of some limitations present in the “Non-linear house systems”, such as, They are only extensible to house from ascendant (Lagna) and not fro...
